Busy Tonight was a late-night talk show that ran on E! from October 2018 to May 2019. In its short run, the show featured the likes of Kim Kardashian, Julia Roberts, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Tess Holliday. But as with any show, it came to an end far too quickly. The show deserves a longer life, and Philipps’ charm and skills deserve to be more fully explored.
However, Busy Tonight format has a number of problems. For starters, the show’s host is not an experienced interviewer, and she prefers to interview friends and family members. Rather than interviewing celebrities, she aims to make the audience feel as if they’re a part of her inner circle. This makes multiple celebrity interviews unnecessary, and can wear thin quickly. Besides, her own personality does not lend itself to a show featuring multiple celebrities.
In an Instagram video, Busy Philipps revealed the news that Busy Tonight has been canceled by the network. The comedy series, which starred Busy Philipps, will air its last episode on May 16, ending the freshman run. Philipps said that the lack of diversity in late-night shows is lame. However, her cancellation won’t have a significant impact on the viewers because it will run four times this week and the next. It will also be shopped around to other networks, but it’s unclear if the show will be renewed or cancelled.
