What is the Purpose of the Energy Information Administration?

During the last few months I have been reading a lot of articles about the Energy Information Administration (EIA) and its purpose. These articles explain what the EIA is, how it works, what it does, and why you should care about it. I’ve also come across a lot of information about the EIA’s work in recent years.

Data collection

During the early years of its activities, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) became aware of the need for more detailed knowledge about the petrochemical industry. It realized that a comprehensive set of energy information could generate a huge return.

EIA has developed a comprehensive data collection program that covers the full range of energy end uses. It also generates short- and long-term energy projections. This information is made available online to both the public and private sector. The agency also produces in-house publications and distributes reports to market participants.

The organization’s data collection and analysis activities are performed by five main operating groups. These include: Petroleum, Natural Gas, Electricity, Renewable Energy, and Coal. Each group has specialized functions and tasks.
